MOZART’S REQUIEM
Apr 19, 2026 - 7:00 PM
The Master Chorale most recently performed a movement from Mozart's Requiem live during the 97th OSCARS® 2025 In Memoriam segment, showcasing the power and enduring relevance of one of the most iconic and emotionally charged choral works ever composed. Written in 1791, just months before Mozart’s death at the age of 35, Requiem remains one of the composer’s greatest masterpieces, both a profound reflection on mortality and a stunning display of his compositional genius.
Mozart’s Requiem will be paired with Fanny Mendelssohn’s Oratorio on Words from the Bible, also known as the Cholera Cantata. Composed in 1847 in response to a devastating cholera epidemic that claimed many lives, the work is a deeply emotional meditation on grief, loss, and eventual hope. Mendelssohn, the older sister of the famous composer Felix Mendelssohn, composed the oratorio to honor the victims of the epidemic in her native Germany. Structured in multiple movements, the Cholera Cantata progresses from mourning and despair to a sense of thanksgiving and redemption.
