In 1941, Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor drew the United States into World War II. President Franklin D. Roosevelt authorized the incarceration of thousands of Japanese American residents and citizens. History remembers the incarcerationas a shameful chapter in American history. In 1988, President Reagan and Congress offered restitution and an apology to victims – and yet, today, 75 years later, the underlying issues are as alive as ever.
85 students from Van Nuys High School’s Vocal Ensemble and Women’s Ensemble have written the words and melodies to create an original oratorio, In America, whose libretto is based on the Japanese American incarceration camps during WWII. The story told by the students highlights the forcible removal and relocation of thousands of Japanese Americans to concentration camps across America and how cope with a confusing situation and try to find dignity in deplorable circumstances.
Two performances of "In America" were held in February 2017.
