Doug Cooney
Lyricist
Doug Cooney (Lyricist) is a writer in Los Angeles with professional credits as a screenwriter, playwright, novelist and lyricist. Among his many honors, he has been awarded the Charlotte B. Chorpenning Cup for his distinguished body of work as a playwright for young audiences by the American Alliance for Theater and Education. He spent last year working on Disney Jr.'s new animated series, Sofia the First. His plays and musicals have been commissioned, produced and toured by the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center Institute, Mark Taper Forum, and South Coast Rep, among others. His novels have been published by Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, including The Beloved Dearly, I Know Who Likes You, and Nobody’s Perfect. His award-winning short film, Abuelo, has screened in multiple festivals across the country and internationally. As a teaching artist, Cooney has been involved with the Los Angeles Master Chorale’s award-winning Voices Within program for 10 years. He has also taught at UCLA Extension’s PATHWAYS program, Chapman University, Cypress College, and California State University, Long Beach. He holds academic degrees from the University of Virginia, the University of Florida, and Trinity Rep Conservatory.
