VOICES WITHIN spring 2024

Voices Within students learn the fundamentals of music and become composers!

5th graders create original songs by collaborating with professionals from the Los Angeles Master Chorale. Songs will be performed in April in free performances at school sites.

East Los Angeles area schools are excited to have the Master Chorale's Voices Within program in residence during the school day.

In our Voices Within program, students find their creative voices and become more self-confident problem-solvers while learning collaboration and communication skills during an important time of their self-discovery.

We invite you to come hear the students premiere songs they have written. All are welcome to attend these free, fun, unforgettable performances. School information coming soon!

Voices Within is excited to share that we have resumed partnerships with two schools in Huntington Park. Fifth grade students learn the fundamentals of music and become composers as they collaborate with professionals from the Los Angeles Master Chorale to write words and melodies to six original songs.

Through our Voices Within program, students find their creative voices and become more self-confident, hone their problem-solving and communication skills during an important time of self-discover. As a culminating event, the students will premiere the songs they have written to a school-wide audience. All are welcome to attend these free events.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The award-winning Voices Within is an artist residency program for fifth grade students who learn to use their imagination to compose words and melodies to create and perform their own original songs. The program curriculum fully integrates Common Core State Standards and uses immersive strategies to deeply engage the students. Three Voices Within teaching artists (a composer, a lyricist, and a performer), work with students, combining elements of music composition, writing, improvisational games, and collaboration techniques throughout a 10-week residency.

Working in close partnership with teachers and administrators at participating schools, the Voices Within teaching artists foster a safe, supportive environment for the students and mentor them to boost 21st Century Skills such as critical thinking, creative problem solving, and communication. The Voices Within program motivates students to stay in school and have fun while learning.

Voices Within is an educational artist residency program developed for the Los Angeles Master Chorale by Marnie Mosiman, in collaboration with Bernardo Solano, Penka Kouneva, David O, and Doug Cooney.
