I went from high school to University College London to study medicine! Got a 1st class degree in Pharmacology along the way and qualified as a doctor in 1994. Worked as a junior doctor in London, Winchester and Oxford, and qualified as a family doctor in 1998. Then worked as a family doctor in inner London while doing a postgraduate degree for 2 years at Trinity College London in vocal performance.
Do you also have a non-singing "day job"? If so, what do you do? My 'other job' is looking after my three children, William (14), Anna Rose (10) and Elodie (5)
Where else do you teach/gig/conduct/sing/perform?
Apart from my LA Master Chorale work, I am a member of the European Concert Trio-we perform in chamber music series in the Southern California area, I am a freelance oratorio soloist and also work as a session musician in town, for movies, TV/songs and video games. This past summer I also took a turn as Music Director of Peter Pan for Theater Palisades Youth program.
Guest Appearances: Performances at the Greystone Mansion, Encinitas Performing Arts Center and Rolling Hills Methodist Church with the European Concert Trio (as a result of winning the Beverly Hills International Competition), performing in the annual UnSung series in Glendale with Amanda Walker (clarinet) and Robert Thies (piano), two solo recitals with the Con Gioia Early Music Ensemble and soprano soloist in Mendelssohn's Elijah in Pasadena. Two recent performances of Haydn's Creation in the Pacific Palisades and in Long Beach with the Orange County Women's Chorus. Soon to be performing the west coast premiere of Dale Trumbore's cycle for soprano and clarinet and the Saint-Saens Christmas Oratorio with Long Beach Chorale.
Recording/TV/Film: I have sung in over 25 films since moving to Los Angeles, including Star Wars, Star Trek, Transformers, Wreck-it Ralph, The Lorax, Ice Age 4, Percy Jackson, Godzilla, Big Hero 6, Jumanji, Frozen and most recently Smallfoot, soon to be released. I have sung on documentaries, video games, and songs. I also do some voice over acting and have now completed two audio books.
Highlights of your musical career: Singing the first performance of Handel's Messiah in the Forbidden City Concert Hall in China, numerous performances of Haydn's Creation around the Los Angeles area, Greystone Mansion Recital with the European Concert Trio, generally performing in oratorios (which I love!), particularly Bach, Haydn, Mozart and Mendelssohn! Touring to the UK, Switzerland and France with John Adams' The Gospel According to the Other Mary. Performing in the Big Sing Event at Walt Disney Concert Hall in July 2018, an inspirational moment in my singing career.
Favorite choral work(s):
All Bach choral music, Haydn's Creation, The Little Match Girl Passion, Mozart Requiem and Mass in C minor.
A defining moment of favorite LA Master Chorale onstage experience: Performing David Lang's the little match girl passion was an amazing moment, and being involved in John Adams' The Gospel According to the Other Mary was an incredible experience. The Big Sing event in Walt Disney Concert Hall in July 2018 was an unforgettable moment of togetherness through singing and renewed my faith in humanity in these difficult times.
What are you listening to these days?
From Baroque (love Albinoni oboe concertos particularly Opus 9 No 2) to large orchestral works of Shostakovich, Mahler, loving my Beethoven and Mozart piano concerto CDs and of course the beautiful vocal recordings of Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, especially Bach cantatas. Love string quartet music.
