obtained a BM degree while still at Eton, then studied law at Exeter College, Oxford, studying music in his spare time; spent summer 1867 in Stuttgart studying with Henry Hugo Pierson; while working as an underwriter, studied music privately
Notable Compositions:
Piano Concerto in F#, Scenes from Prometheus Unbound, Symphonic Variations, Blest Pair of Sirens, 12 sets of songs on English Lyrics, I Was Glad, Jerusalem, Symphonic Fantasia “1912”
in 1875 became a sub-editor for Grove’s Dictionary of Music and Musicians; 1883 appointed professor of music history at Royal College of Music, where he also taught composition, later became director of RCM; knighted in 1898, created a baronet in 1902
Curious Facts:
disciple of Darwin and Herbert Spencer and wrote widely on historiographical topics founded on evolutionary theory
