best known for song writing as well as Intimations of Immortaility, Clarinet Concerto, Dies natalis, Lo, the full, final sacrifice, For St. Cecilia
after meeting Holst, Arthur Bliss and Vaughan Williams, Vaughan Williams obtained a teaching post for him at the Royal Academy of Music; during World War II, worked for Ministry of War Transport and lodged German and Czech refugees in his home
Curious Facts:
settled with his wife in Aldbourne, Wiltshire, where he devoted himself to composing and apple growing, saving some rare English apples from extinction; founded The Newbury String Players, an amateur chamber orchestra which he conducted until his death
