I went from school to University College London to study medicine! Got a 1st class degree in Pharmacology along the way and qualified as a doctor in London in 1994. Worked as a junior doctor in London, Winchester and Oxford, and qualified as a family doctor in 1998. Then worked as a family doctor in inner London while doing a postgraduate degree for 2 years at Trinity College London in vocal performance.
Do you also have a non-singing "day job"? If so, what do you do?
My 'other job' is looking after my three children, William (12), Anna Rose (8) and Elodie (3)
Where else do you teach/gig/conduct/sing/perform?
Apart from my LA Master Chorale work, I am a member of the European Concert Trio-we perform in chamber music series in the Southern California area, I am a freelance oratorio soloist and also work as a session musician in town, for movies, TV/songs and video games.
Performances at the Greystone Mansion, Encinitas Performing Arts Center and Rolling Hills Methodist Church with the European Concert Trio (as a result of winning the Beverly Hills International Competition), performing in the annual UnSung series in Glendale with Amanda Walker (clarinet) and Robert Thies (piano), two solo recitals with the Con Gioia Early Music Ensemble and soprano soloist in Mendelssohn's Elijah in Pasadena.
I have sung in over 20 films since moving to Los Angeles, including Wreck-It-Ralph, The Lorax, Ice Age 4, Percy Jackson, Godzilla, Big Hero 6 and Frozen. I have sung on documentaries, video games and songs.
Highlights of your musical career:
Singing the first performance of Handel's Messiah in the Forbidden City Concert Hall in China, Greystone Mansion Recital with the European Concert Trio, generally performing in oratorios (which I love!), particularly Bach and Mendelssohn!
Favorite choral work(s):
Handel's Messiah, Bach B minor Mass, Mendelssohn's Elijah...hard to narrow it down!
A defining moment of favorite LA Master Chorale onstage experience:
Performing David Lang's the little match girl passion was an amazing moment
What are you listening to these days?
I have got all my old CDs out and am playing them again! From baroque (love Albinoni oboe concertos particularly Opus 9 No 2) to large orchestral works of Shostakovich, Mahler, loving my Beethoven and Mozart piano concerto CDs and of course the beautiful vocal recordings of Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, especially Bach cantatas.
