among the first major keyboard composers; also composed more than 250 vocal works including motets, madrigals, chansons and Psalms
served as the organist for the Oude Kerk in Amsterdam for 44 years, starting at age 15; was succeeded at the post by his son, Dirk Pieterszoon; was also in great demand as a teacher
Curious Facts:
Sweelinck was actually his mother's name, which he began using around 1594; was a master improviser on the organ
