Best Known For: although he was a busy organist throughout his life, he was prolific composer who wrote for organ, harpsichord, chamber ensembles and various vocal media
Notable Compositions:
Kanon und Gigue in D-Dur für drei Violinen und Basso Continuo (Canon in D), 1680; Hexachordum Apollinis (Apollo'sLyre), 1699; Musicalische Sterbensgedancken (Musical Thoughts on Death), 1683; Musicalische Ergotzung (Musical Delight), 1691-95; Acht Chorale zum Praeambulieren, 1693
Assignments: deputy organist of St. Stephen's Cathedral; court organist at Eisenach, in the employ of Prince Johann Georg, Duke of Saxe-Eisenach; organist fo the Predigerkirche at Erfurt; musician and organist at the Wurttemberg court under Duchess Magdalena Sibylla; town organist at Gotha; organist at St. Sebald in Nuremberg until his death
Curious Facts:
like the Bachs, the Pachelbels were a family of composers; one of Johann's sons emigrated to America and became one of the most polished musicians in the Colonies in the first half of the 18th century
