Do you also have a non-singing "day job"? If so, what do you do?
I am a teaching artist for the LA Opera and the Music Center of LA: Active Arts; I am also on voice faculty at Occidental College and run my own private vocal studio.
Where else do you teach/gig/conduct/sing/perform?
I continue to sing for several opera companies in the Los Angeles area including but not limited to Pacific Opera Project, Repertory Opera Company, Independent Opera Company, Redlands Opera Theatre, and other freelance solo/recital work. I enjoy getting to record movie soundtracks, and I also conduct the LA Opera's Opera Camp in every year in August with works dedicated to civil rights and social justice. I also love singing for the LA Opera's Educom Department.
Recent roles include Madame Herz role in Mozart's The Impresario with Pacific Opera Project, Clorinda in La Cenerentola with Repertory Opera Company. This spring I premiered a new opera by Peter Wing Healy entitled The Spell of Tradition in the role of Sybilla, and I am in the works to originate the role of Mary in a new Russian opera entitled The Passion of St. Mary by Gamma Skupinsky, with possible spring performances in Ukraine. I am also preparing for my new role as mommy as we expect our firstborn in October 2017.
You'll hear me sing a few solo lines on the soundtrack to Avatar, and I was the soprano soloist for the independent film 9/Tenths; other soundtracks include X-men: Days of Future Past, Godzilla, Hail Ceasar, X-men Origins: Wolverine, National Treasure 2, License to Wed, Lady in the Water among others; I've also had the privilege to record with Linda Ronstadt and Brian Setzer, and have done the Master Chorale recordings for Daniel Variations, Itaipu, Te Deum by Argento, and the new David Lang recordings of the national anthems/the little match girl passion. I also recorded the Grammy Award®-winning Padilla: Sun of Justice with the LA Chamber Singers.
Highlights of your musical career:
LA Philharmonic - Soprano Soloist for Schnittke Symphony No. 4 (Green Umbrella series); Opera San Luis Obispo annual gala, Madame Herz in The Impresario for Pacific Opera Project, Queen of the Night for Redlands Opera Theatre, appearances with PACEM - Pacific Academy of Ecclesiastical Music in San Diego, CA; co-winner of the Beverly Hills Recital Series; in my outreach performances, I played Sinopa/Suzanna in The Marriage of Figueroa presented by LA Opera Outreach.
Favorite choral work(s):
Still Verdi Requiem never gets old!!!
A defining moment of favorite LA Master Chorale onstage experience:
El Niño with the LA Phil and Peter Sellars. Dawn Upshaw is my hero, and it was an absolute thrill to be with my fellow Master Chorale members on stage next to her. Close second is also getting to tour with The Gospel According to Mary. I'm a John Adams fan, what can I say???
What are you listening to these days?
Carmen for performing with LA Opera - and anything else I think my baby would like to hear in my tummy.
Anything you'd like to add about yourself?
I'm still a recovering band and drum corp geek - flautist and color guard, and danced ballet for 12+ years. Just celebrated our 12 year wedding anniversary with my husband Andy Brown, Chief Operations Officer of LAMC, who is going to be a great daddy!!!
Where do you live in L.A.?
What L.A. experience do you consider essential for visitors/newcomers?
Downtown!!! It is such a revitalized and happening place with Walt Disney Concert Hall (still my favorite place on the planet to sing) and the Broad museum and all the restaurants!!! I've lived here over 16 years and it still surprises me! But we also love our constantly revitalizing hood of Eagle Rock and Highland Park - so many new tasty places!
