Best Known For:
being one of the most important composers of the 17th century as well as in all of English history
Notable Compositions:
Dido and Aeneas, King Arthur, The Fairy-Queen; composed music for many plays, including Nathaniel Lee's Theodosius; also wrote many sacred works and anthems while part of the Chapel Royal
Assignments:
in 1677 became composer for the violins at court; in 1682 admitted to Gentlement of the Chapel Royal to serve as one of three organists, as well as organist at Westminster Abbey
Curious Facts:
is buried adjacent to the organ in Westminster Abbey
