Best Known For:
deep religious faith which is evident in more than 1,000 sacred works for Lutheran liturgies; owned a rather avant-garde compositional outlook, often employing dense scoring for as many as 16 distinct voices as well as a highly ornamental Italian vocal style

Es ist ein' Ros' entsprungen (Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming), 1600; Terpsichore Dances, 1612; In dulci jubilo, 1619
Assignments:
organist at St. Marien Church in Frankfurt, 1587; organist, then Kapellmeister for Duke Heinrich Julius of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel
Curious Facts:
though unfinished, his Syntagma musicum still remians a significant early primer on music theory and composition
